When Stillness Looks More Like Surrender

When stillness looks more like surrender

“Be still, and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalms 46:10 (ESV)

Even though this verse is on coffee mugs and decorative signs, I always found it challenging. In a world that rewards productivity, what exactly is God asking? Am I supposed to sit quietly and not move? And even if my body is resting, how do I turn my mind off?

Maybe like me, stillness does not come easily to you.

Perhaps this verse has left you confused, so let’s look at other Bible translations to better understand its meaning.

The NASB translates “be still” as “cease striving”. The Passion translation reads, “Surrender your anxiety.”  The CEB declares, “That’s enough! Now know that I am in God!” In CSB, it says, “Stop your fighting.”

Each one of these phrases is liberating.

I no longer need to strive or muster up my own strength. Instead of fighting, I can surrender.

As a fellow control freak, this is great news! I can cooperate with God versus trying to do it all myself.

I can stop listening to other voices and be still and know that God is God!

Does this give you freedom and peace of mind?

In the original language, the Hebrew word for “be still” is raphah, which means to let go, to cease, or to be weak.

What if being still is less about movement and more about our heart posture?

As we relinquish control and partner with God through surrendering to His lead, then we can pick up what He has for us. But first, we need to put down what we are holding onto.

What do you need to release?

Are you clinging to worry and God is asking you to trust His timing and plan? Are you hanging onto other people’s opinions more than Your Savior? Are you harboring bitterness toward someone and the Holy Spirit is nudging you to release the pain to Him and offer forgiveness?

Friend, you cannot do it with your own strength. Quit trying and instead trust that God will fight for you!

Let us see our weakness like Paul did knowing God’s grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

This reminds me of Isaiah 40:31 (NLT), “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Other translations say, “those who hope in the Lord or wait on the Lord.” Waiting sounds a lot like being still.

I want this for us in 2026!

Let’s pray for God to help us remember that stillness looks like surrender!

When stillness looks more like surrender

Dear God, help us wait on you with expectant hope knowing that you are God and we are not. Guide us as we release our control and fully trust Your way and Your timing. I believe You can do more through us than we ever could do our own. When we waver or fall back into old habits, God give us Your peace and strength today! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
