When Loss Tries to Steal your Identity, Cling to this Important Truth

I remember wondering if I fit in.

For over 15 years, I had been a member of this club.   Immediately after joining, we attended a bible study for young married couples.  As babies joined our family, we began leading a married with kids small group.  Married was part of my identity.

What do you do when you no longer fit into where you have always belonged?

This became my reality as I walked through a heartbreaking divorce.  Honestly, I struggled with no longer being married.  Friends, no one wants to be kicked out of the club.

Grief has a way of stripping our identity.

Maybe you find yourself in a similar situation. Perhaps you lost a parent and are struggling with your new role as a daughter without a mother to call for advice.  Maybe you lost a child and the empty chair at your table is a constant reminder that a loved one is missing.

This is how Sara felt. She shares about this on my Depth podcast this week as we highlight her new book, Made for Hope. Sara’s story of loss and redemption is powerful especially as she shares about the unexpected gifts she found in the middle of her brokenness.

One gift she found was her identity, her true identity!

I love Sara’s words of wisdom after losing her son. She says, “No matter what else changed in my life, my identity in Christ had not.  I will always be a child of God, no matter what I had lost or let go of.”

What do you do when loss steals your identity?

Cling to this important truth that will never change: You will always be a child of God, chosen and dearly loved.

Everything else can be taken away. If your identity is wrapped up in your role as a wife or a mom, you can lose that.  If your worth is tied to what others think of you, you can lose that.  If you identify yourself with your job and your successes, you can lose those too.

There is only one thing that you cannot lose.  Friends, we cannot lose our relationship with Jesus.

When loss tries to steal your identity and it feels like you are being kicked out of the club, just remember you will never be kicked out of God’s club.

He loves you!  He died on the cross for you. You are His Masterpiece.  Praying this encourages you today.

Love, Jodi
