4 Truths to Remember in the Middle of Grief

Another wave of grief washed over me. Sadness and exhaustion consume my body. I cannot keep up with it all: my to do list or intentional time with my loved ones.

It feels like life is spinning faster than I can handle.

My mind is easily distracted, and my body is more fatigued. Barely able to keep my head above water, I am feeling overwhelmed and disheartened. Maybe you can relate.

More depleted than ever, I cry out to God in my pain. Thankfully He reminds me of some important truths to help me not sink farther into my hole of discouragement. I want to share these four encouragements with you today.

1. Remember You Are Not Alone.

I think we can so easily assume we are the only one feeling this way and that is not true. I encourage you to talk to a trusted friend and share the emotions you are feeling.

I regularly saw a Christian counselor in the middle of my deep grief from my divorce and it was the best decision I ever made as she gave me tools to help me in my grief.

2. Guard Your Heart.

When you are depleted and discouraged, it is easy to lose heart. I encourage you to find a Scripture Verse that will encourage you to focus on God, not our problems. I love Isaiah 43:1-3

“Don’t be afraid, for I will protect you. I call you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I am with you; when you pass through the streams, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not harm you. For I am the Lord your God.” Isaiah 43:1-3

3. Lower Your Expectations.

As our energy is depleted due to the many emotions in grief, we will not be at full capacity.  I encourage you to give yourself grace especially my fellow Enneagram 1 friends. Adjust your to do list and prioritize what needs to get done now and what can be delegated to someone else or even just removed all together in your season of loss.

4. Remember God is in control even when life spins out of control.

Many times, we don’t understand why this is happening to us and we can doubt God and His goodness. I encourage you to run to God with your pain: the questions, the frustrations, the sadness, and the doubts. He can handle it.

Lean in close to Him. Ask Him for His strength and comfort. Trust that He will get you through this time of grief. The key word is through. You cannot go around it, but you can let yourself feel each hard emotion and lament to God in your grief.

Friend, I needed these words as I felt overwhelmed and depleted. Maybe you do too!

It is okay not to be okay!

It is okay to let go of full capacity, and it is okay to give yourself extra grace in the middle of loss.

Praying for you!

Love, Jodi
