When our World gets Flipped Upside Down
I was in awe of what God showed me while reading the Christmas story in Luke.
Picture Mary planning for her wedding, excited to be a carpenter’s wife, and looking forward to starting a family with him. And then in one evening, after a visit from the angel Gabriel, her entire world was flipped upside down.
Mary’s life was turned upside down by one word: pregnancy.
Have you ever had your world turned upside down by one word?
Maybe your word is Cancer, Infertility, Divorce, Miscarriage, Unemployed, Single. It is amazing how one word can change everything.
I imagine Mary started worrying about how Joseph would respond to this unexpected news. She probably struggled with telling her parents and if the neighbors would gossip. I am sure these thoughts crossed her mind, but in the midst of it all, she says something beautiful.
In Luke 1:38 (ESV), Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” In the NIV version, it says, “May your word to me be fulfilled.”
“Let It Be”- three powerful words of surrender.
I wonder how she could say those words in the middle of the unknown. How was she able to fully surrender in the middle of her world turning upside down?
I believe Mary trusted God and believed His plans for her were good even when she did not understand them. She had faith in her God no matter what circumstances turned her world upside down. I love her example to us.
When our worlds get turned upside down, can we also believe like Mary? Can we trust God is working behind the scenes to bring good out of our difficult circumstances? Can we have “Let It Be” Faith?
Friend, faith in the middle of the unknown is not easy. But I love how God was faithful in ways beyond Mary’s imagination. I am sure the initial news was difficult as she kept trying to explain how she became pregnant and felt the judgement of others. But can you imagine, the joy and excitement she felt when she held Baby Jesus in her arms- the Savior of the World!
I love that God always has a plan. I love that He specializes in redeeming our greatest heartbreaks in ways we could never imagine. I pray we can remember this truth the next time our world gets flipped upside down.
Love, Jodi
